This trout pool is a mile and a half hike into the Smokies. Gorgeous year round!
Some of our guests ask for an early morning breakfast, heading in to join a fly-fishing guide in Gatlinburg. Then they drive into Gatlinburg, then drive right back past our inn on the way to the best fly-fishing in the Smokies!
Guess they could have slept in an hour later!
Of course, Cosby Creek is stocked with trout right from our bridge to the farm. We have 1300 feet on the river and the herons shouldn't be the only ones catching the fish. And the wild trout upriver in Cosby Campground are a challenge, plus the 20 minute drive over to Big Creek makes walking up the river from the picnic area one of the best fishing spots for fly-fishing and trout hunting. One of my guests said he did the best above Mouse Creek Falls.
Bring your fly-fishing gear and practice your casts in the pond. The Townsend Troutfest is a free exposition and just a fun drive from Creekwalk if you can bear being around that many people. It is free, May 14 and 15, and supports a good cause, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Friends of the Smokies. Or just let me pack you a lunch or make you an early early breakfast, come on back with good stories to tell. I've heard some doozies in the kitchen! My favorite remark was from the dad of a groom who decided to have the bachelor party be a guided fishing trip into the park. Dad was exhausted at the end of the day and said, "I've been climbing over boulders the size of Voltswagons all day!" You can always rent all 7 rooms at the lodge and we will wait on you hand and foot! And grill your fish if you clean them!

One of the most treasured experiences of our close to nature getaways is a hike to a waterfall in the Great Smokies. Cosby Campground has many trail heads into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is Cosby's own national park entrance. There are over 800 miles of maintained park trails in the Smokies. This trail is just 2.2 miles in to a beautiful waterfall with bridge crossings, amazing rock formations, and huge hemlocks.

Rolling Rescue cuts ribbon today in Newport

Dr. Carol Hood and her co-volunteers and partners at the Newport Animal Shelter cut the ribbon today for the rolling rescue building in Newport, named the Robert Brannon Rolling Rescue after contributor Robert Brannon. Over 6000 dog lives have been saved with the rolling rescue of pups taken to other parts of the nation needing dogs for adoption.
Lots of barking was the backdrop (barkdrop!) for the event just outside the new shelter. A van transports the pups to New York and Wisconsin and other areas of the nation desiring dogs appropriate for adoption. Newport Animal Shelter is the leading center in the southeast for saving lives of animals. All of the veterinarians, including Dr. Carol Hood and Dr. Compton, volunteer their time at no charge for the love of the animals. The next "Big Fix" is scheduled for March 12 and is the spay/neuter program to assist with animal population control. Five veterinarians from the surrounding area will be assisting and the surgery area will be expanded at the Newport Animal Shelter for the day long event.
Any contributions are appreciated as this is a privately owned facility supported by loving contributions without any tax burden to the population of Newport and Cocke County.

A beautiful fall evening heralded the perfect day for Laura and Hoyt at Whisperwood Farm Chapel. The family joined in to celebrate their vows and the reception followed at Creekwalk Inn Bed and Breakfast. A delicious buffet of roasted butternut squash laced with cranberry, beef shishkabobs on the grill, chicken Alfredo on angel hair pasta,a vegetable medley and fresh baked bread followed by wedding cake with raspberry and chocolate filling. Lexington World Equestrian Games a fun visit--we cooked breakfast and drove up for the day!

Many of my guests last week were on the way back or to the games in Lexington. I especially enjoyed their encouragement to get up there and prepared breakfast for Annie and Chris from England and then took off October 5th to see some of my favorite horse whisperers at the games. Pat Parelli's wife was splendid on her young warmblood. I loved her way of giving treats from the saddle to reward good behavior. Also John Lyons kept us laughing with his balloon demonstration and then played with the Paso Finos and danced across the boardwalk on a high stepping paso. All in all, a wonderful day. First time ever the United States has hosted the world games. I was honored to be there, even if only for half a day. Thank you, Annie and Christopher, for sharing your delight and reminding me to go, too! Happy travels to you back home and hope to see you again.

Lacy and Jonathan enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the chance to get a great photography wedding package included in their week long getaway. They visited The Titanic and Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge, Hot Springs Spa, trail in the Great Smoky Mountains, waterfalls, and just plain relaxed and had fun here on the farm. We had an engagement shoot before the wedding, lots of wedding photos in a candlelight ceremony in our wedding chapel, then Lacy was even willing to put on her dress again for daylight photos on Monday. We had fun in the meadows and by the creek. Outdoor weddings at Whisperwood Farm and Creekwalk Inn Bed and Breakfast...just a dream come true for Courtney and Micah on 10/10/10...no, not 10 a.m.! We waited until 3 p.m. for the ceremony, the dramatic arrival of our bride by horse and carriage looping around our natural outdoor amphitheater next to the chapel. Not many brides get to see the flower girls walking down the aisle through a beautiful white pine tree's lacy branches. Our driver brought Courtney and her dad to the rustic arbor where she was escorted off the carriage by her dad. The aisle was scattered with orange, yellow and deep pink rose petals and reflected the fall season perfectly. Congratulations, Courtney and Micah! Hope you visit the farm often and return to your little bit of heaven and our Whisperwood Cabin where we can pamper you just like on your honeymoon. A breath of fresh air, even more than our usual mountain breezes, just blew through Tennessee in the form of Pamela Lanier.
Pamela is a gatherer, explorer, huntress of interesting, unique places. She has single-handedly envisioned the gathering of over 8500 lodging properties in her web sites and international guidebooks. With all of her fame, she settles into the landscape and the fun of our Smoky Mountain area like the comfortable, seasoned traveler that she is—eager to experience a new adventure.
I have had the privilege of experiencing Pamela’s eclectic travel style as her host. We visited our local apple barn and orchard, Carver’s Orchard, tasting their famous fried pies under a Smoky Mountain waterfall. Creekwalk Inn and Cabins at Whisperwood Farm, Cosby, now features her cookbook collection gathered from her travels. Her signed copies rest in the apple basket she just had to buy at Carver’s but couldn’t sneak through security on the airplane home.
I see Tennessee a little brighter by seeing my neighborhood through her eyes. A sparkling September day glistened around us. I am already in love with Tennessee, especially the Smokies, having lived here since 1982. Yet I’ve never seen light dance like stars in my favorite swimming hole, Midnight Hole. Pamela was first in the water, swimming into the falls, or as close as we could get. The current kept pushing us back. After our icy swim, we draped ourselves over the boulders on the little beach, laying out on the hot rocks around the pool-- a true hot rock massage, solar style.
So I will miss Pamela, knowing she is enjoying hearing our creek lullaby her to sleep in our Hannah Mountain Room. I will miss knowing all we have created here is being received by a true connoisseur of travel.
Best of all, besides the new fresh air and the new vision, I feel I have made a friend. I do believe the kindness of her vision and her life work enlivens the world with discovery. Summer hayfields, uncut glory!

Sometimes waking up here in the morning is so incredibly beautiful I feel like I am in a painting and I move with the colors as though I am seeing and being what I see all at once! Our hay cutter is broken and the tall grasses are long and colorful full of black eyed susans and queen anne's lace. The early morning light glows from within it all! I am so blessed! Come on back for a visit! We've been swimming in Cosby Creek with the pups!

Our little farm is on 47 acres and in a town that is not even incorporated, Cosby,Tennessee, just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, between Gatlinburg and North Carolina.
Our guests are welcome to experience the wonderful hiking trails in the Smokies, over 900 miles so a reason to return for many trips to our inn. All of our rooms are named after hiking trails. Here on the farm, just a few miles from the park entrance, we have meadows and creeks and trees with beautiful mountains in the backdrop. Summer fireflies light up the night along with a canopy of stars.
Our horse and dog pets lounge around the farm and wonder where their hammocks and rocking chairs are...My daughter raises Australian Shepherds so sometimes puppies are underfoot, but never in the house!
We have lots of wonderful books to read and nooks and crannies to read them. Our rooms vary in size from smaller than cozy (nooks), to normal size rooms, all with cathedral ceilings and paddle fans and interesting log beam architecture. Two of our rooms have private hot tub and fireplace gardens, perfect for honeymooners or anniversary celebrations. Our farm was the campus for the Log Home Guide magazine and log home lovers enjoy the 8 styles of log buildings on the farm and their interesting history.
Cosby Creek along the front of the farm is stocked with trout and makes great fly fishing. We love to tell our guests about our favorite swimming holes in the park and cook out areas. One of the local stores has a world class collection of hand made quilts representing the art of Appalachia.
Of course, it is tempting to go beyond Carver's Apple Orchard restaurant just down the street, or our local Bluegrass and Mexican food casual restaurant called "The Front Porch" a short walk from the farm...on to Gatlinburg, just 19 miles away, or off to Asheville to see the Biltmore. I'm glad there are many interesting city trips for our guests an hour or less away. I notice more and more that our guests try a raft trip, or a zip line, just up the road in Hartford over the Pigeon River, and then have supper close to home and un-agenda themselves. That is something the swing, curled up dogs on the porch, and a guitar someone might pick up and play seems to encourage. ______________________________________________

While enjoying the mountain scenery, our guests find lots of good books to read in the living room library opposite the picture windows. We have collected books over the years ourselves and our local library has a book sale regularly, so lots of titles to interest every reader. Several of our guests have begun writing the book they meant to write on the balcony by the stream or at our picnic table. Welcome readers and writers! I'm a fan of Prairie Home Companion and also an English Lit major. If you enjoy the show, you know all the jokes about how useless we English lit majors are! We have a few puppies left to play with and Kelsey wants to sell to good homes right away. Kelsey, my talented daughter, is up in Montreal right now learning French to go with her culinary arts degree. Hope she is learning lots of new recipes too!

Lindsey Dodgen and Corey Whitted celebrated their wedding today at Whisperwood Farm Retreat in Cosby, Tennessee. The reception on the porches was relaxed and fun, with wonderful weather cooperating! Australian Shepherd Puppies, 8 weeks old!

We had fun with the puppies today after a beautiful wedding, lots of good food, and great weather. Kelsey, my daughter, returns from her 4H trip tomorrow and the pups go back to her house. I will miss them! They are such fun to walk with after they realize they can't be directly under foot.
Just about the prettiest eyes I've ever seen. Our bed and breakfast guests have been enjoying lots of wiggles and laughs!
